Montmartre walking tours compared, honestly

You can walk Montmartre on your own for nothing. A guide is worth paying for when you want the stories, the shortcuts or the food, and the walks on this site do very different jobs.

Montmartre is a neighbourhood, not a ticketed site. The streets, Place du Tertre, the views and the Sacré-Cœur basilica cost nothing. So none of the walks below sells you entry to anything you could not reach yourself; what they sell is a guide, a route, a format and, on two of them, food and wine.

Below: a comparison table, what the walks include and leave out, where each one meets, which suits a short visit, a budget, an early start or an appetite, and how long you need.

The quick answer

For most first visits, the highlights walk is the safe pick: the most-reviewed Montmartre walk on GetYourGuide, top rated, for up to 16 people, starting beneath the Sacré-Cœur. The art lovers walk is the cheapest, the 1.5-hour walk among the shortest, the early-morning walk the quietest start, and the cheese, wine and pastry walk the one to book if you are hungry. None includes a ticket you need: the basilica is free.

Which Montmartre walking tour is best?

The highlights walk for most people; the art lovers walk on a budget; the 1.5-hour walk if you are short on time.

The table compares every Montmartre walk on the site, plus the seated cheese tasting, which is not a walk but often gets booked as one. From-prices per person in USD; ratings and review counts are GetYourGuide's and they move.

What does a Montmartre walking tour include?

A guide and a route. No entry tickets are included on the plain walks, because none are needed: the streets and the basilica are free.

The highlights walk includes the walk, a local guide and photos taken by the guide. The art lovers walk lists “entry to the Montmartre cemetery”, but that entry is free to everyone anyway, so do not count it as a ticket. Several walks list the Sacré-Cœur under not included. That is harmless: it is free, and you can go in after the tour.

The one exception is the dome. Only the walk with the dome option offers it, as a paid extra; on your own it costs €8 at the on-site office (see the dome tickets guide).

The cheapest guided walk on the site at $11, with trivia and a small sketching session.

Where do Montmartre walking tours meet?

Each walk has its own meeting point, from Place Saint-Pierre beneath the basilica to the metro stations at the foot of the hill.

  • Highlights walk: Place Saint-Pierre, right beneath the Sacré-Cœur; the guide waits near the carousel.
  • Art lovers walk: 20 avenue Rachel.
  • 1.5-hour walk: Blanche metro (line 2); look for the guide in a pink vest.
  • Walk with dome option: 22 rue des Abbesses.
  • Early-morning walk: Anvers metro.
  • Cheese, wine and pastry walk: near Blanche metro.
  • Cheesemonger tasting: in the shop at 98 rue Marcadet.

Check the exact spot in your booking confirmation: operators sometimes fine-tune it.

Which walk suits a short visit or a tight budget?

The 1.5-hour walk is the shortest; the art lovers walk, from $11, is the cheapest with a strong rating.

The 1.5-hour guided walk is English only, runs in a small group, and goes ahead rain or shine. The art lovers walk runs in English at 13:00 and in French at 10:00, so it does not suit an early start in English. The walk with the dome option starts at the same from-price, but it has only 34 reviews: book it for the dome, not as the safe choice.

Who should not book a walk at all? If you just want to see the basilica and the view, take the funicular or the stairs and go in for free.

Is there a food tour in Montmartre?

Yes: the cheese, wine and pastry walk is a real walk with tasting stops. The cheesemonger tasting is seated in one shop and is not a walk.

The cheese, wine and pastry walk takes up to 12 people to stops for pastries, savoury specialties, chocolates, cheese, charcuterie and wine, over 3 hours. It is not for children under 4. The cheesemonger tasting sits you down in a cheese shop at 98 rue Marcadet for eight cheeses and five wines, one of them sparkling, with about ten guests. Book the tasting if you want to learn about cheese; book the walk if you also want to see the hill.

Can you tour Montmartre early in the morning?

Yes: the early-morning walk meets at Anvers metro, with photos on request and breakfast at the end.

The Montmartre Before the Crowds walk lasts 2 hours and is not for children under 10. It is well rated but has only 56 reviews, so weigh that. If mornings suit you, the best time to visit Montmartre explains how the day unfolds on the hill.

How long does it take to walk around Montmartre?

The guided walks here take from 1.5 hours to 2 h 20 min; the food walk takes 3 hours.

The distances are short: from the Sacré-Cœur it is about 200 m to Place du Tertre, about 300 m to the Musée de Montmartre and Dalí Paris, and about 500 m to the Bateau-Lavoir and the Mur des je t'aime. What slows you down is the slope: the hill rises 130 m. Add time for the basilica, which is free, and for the dome climb of nearly 300 steps if you want the view. Moving on to other parts of Paris? The funicular guide has walking distances to the Louvre, Notre-Dame and the Eiffel Tower.

Are Montmartre walking tours wheelchair accessible?

Most are not suitable: Montmartre is a steep hill with stairs and cobbles. Check the accessibility notes on each listing before you book.

Some help exists on the hill. The basilica has a lift for people with reduced mobility at the back (35 rue du Chevalier de la Barre), open 8:30 to 18:30. The dome has no lift. Dalí Paris states that it has no disabled access. The funicular replaces 222 steps between Square Louise-Michel and the basilica.
